Too often sports and recreation facilities are large, disparate ‘containers’ that segregate rather than unite surrounding spaces. The strategy for this pool, planned for the existing College Rifles Sports Complex, was for an architecture that departs from the incongruous box and responds to, and unifies, a number of existing buildings. Formally, the pool has a large mono-pitched roof that addresses the existing buildings and provides necessary height to the interior space. Cladding is a translucent polycarbonate, which allows a naturally lit interior that requires less artificial lighting. Movement and depth to the façade, and appropriate solar protection, is achieved by shifting from heavy, plaster-rendered surfaces to areas of expansive glazing with louvered fins that also provide an opportunity to represent the College Rifles colours.
