Heritage renovations are projects of special interest to our studio. They represent opportunities to blend history with modernity, to preserve the essence of the past while adapting to the needs of the present, and to introduce new character in ways that complement and elevate the existing aesthetic.

Many renovation projects are undertaken soon after a property changes hands, as new owners seek to upgrade a home to suit their circumstances. In this case, however, the client had lived in a charming character villa on Auckland’s harbour edge for more than 40 years. During that time, they had layered it with a variety of treasures — artworks, artefacts, family keepsakes.

A richness of architectural experience was sought to balance the tapestry of stories and experiences. Integrity of detail and material qualities were of the utmost importance, as was seeking delight in colour and texture, to give each space its own character.

The substantial renovation was based on a reorganised spatial plan. Two primary moves improve the sociability and flow of space — the kitchen was brought into an open area that connects with the refinished dining room while the verandah was extended around the house, creating a sheltered outdoor living area perfect for Auckland’s four seasons in a day climate.

Throughout the home, charming greens, deep pinks and maroons welcome you into treasure box rooms appointed with elements from the client’s collection. The celebration of carpentry detail and richly appointed materials flows into a centrepiece kitchen, an entire room designed as bespoke furniture. Located under the rhythm of the scalloped pink-painted ceiling, the curving console island, bank of storage and refined Ote hardware are all wrapped in rich and honeyed heart-kauri and plate brass.
