Splashes of colour are laid over a muted palette of natural timber and white washed brick in this Auckland home. Designed to provide a striking and contemporary form, while retaining the much loved circulation and planning strategies of Auckland’s characteristic villas, this house is both at home in its context and a step forward for that environment. Designed across a sloping site with terraces creating level outdoor areas, the house creates two urban courtyards which allow light and air deep into the plan. The home includes an office, pottery studio, children’s playroom and mezzanine over the master bedroom for taking in the expansive views from a playful pop-up in the roof. This modern residential project creates a lively and particularly personal place to live, while also responding to difficult city planning controls and flood plain restrictions.
